photo. 2.527 viewsMr Dean of Hatton Garden, respected maker of scientific instruments and glassware, was the principal competitor of Newton and Co. When his son, Alfred, realised in 1896 that Röntgen's discovery would create a demand for X-ray apparatus, and so proposed manufacturing it, he declined to be involved. At the end of the year, the young Alfred E. Dean, having failed to convince his father of the new direction, established his own company at 82 Hatton Garden. Alfred Dean (1866-1927) was a dedicated businessman and within eight years claimed to be the largest manufacturer of X-ray apparatus in Britain. In 1969,the company was absorbed by the General Electrical Company Ltd. It was merged with Watson & Sons Ltd. to form GEC Medical and the Dean name disappeared.
